About MetaTrader 5
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the successor to MT4, released in 2010 by MetaQuotes. While MT4 was built specifically for forex, MT5 was designed from the ground up as a multi-asset platform — supporting forex, stocks, futures, commodities, and cryptocurrencies in a single interface. MT5 features 21 timeframes, 80+ built-in indicators, Depth of Market (DOM) functionality, an integrated economic calendar, and the more powerful MQL5 programming language. The advanced strategy tester supports multi-currency backtesting with real tick data and visual mode. MT5 also supports both netting and hedging account modes. The key limitation: MQL4 EAs and indicators are not compatible with MT5, so the MT4 EA ecosystem does not transfer. For a detailed feature comparison, see our MT4 page.
Why Choose MT5 Over MT4?
Multi-Asset Trading
MT5 supports forex, stocks, futures, commodities, and cryptocurrencies in a single platform. MT4 is forex-only.
21 Timeframes
MT5 offers 21 timeframes from M1 to MN1, compared to MT4's 9. More timeframes mean more granular analysis.
80+ Built-in Indicators
MT5 includes 80+ technical indicators vs MT4's 30+. Additional indicators can be downloaded from the MQL5 Marketplace.
Depth of Market (DOM)
MT5 shows Level II pricing — the full order book with bid/ask volumes at each price level. MT4 does not support DOM.
Economic Calendar
MT5 has a built-in economic calendar with real-time news events. MT4 requires third-party tools for this.
Advanced Strategy Tester
MT5's strategy tester supports multi-currency backtesting, visual mode, and real tick data. MT4's tester is basic by comparison.
MQL5 Programming
MQL5 is more powerful than MQL4 — object-oriented, faster execution, and access to more platform features. However, MQL4 EAs do not run on MT5.
Netting & Hedging
MT5 supports both netting (single position per symbol) and hedging (multiple positions per symbol) account modes. MT4 only supports hedging.
